Becoming Me, a Poem by Nana Amma Adomaa Abrefa

I have lost myself in a death song

Only to find me again in a bird's song

I have tiptoed around sanity and insanity

Measuring the sand that has passed under time's feet

Counting what is left in the taleteller’s feat

I have hovered between life and death,

Losing myself, yet finding me again

Carried by the turbulent winds of existence

I have searched for meaning from the heavens

Receiving only the silence of winking stars

I have conversed with mockingbirds and night wind

Seeking solace in their whispers and sights

I have embraced every dirge sung

And every dream song swaying to life's turbulent applause

I have danced to the crashing wave’s defiant beat

With each step, I roar against the storm's wild retreat

This is what it means to be me

I have confronted my demons

Now I ride triumphantly

Over life's tempestuous storm

To become me
